OVERVIEW
Ennis, a historic town located in County Clare, south-west Ireland, is bisected by the River Fergus, which flows southward from its confluence with the River Fergus Minor, eventually discharging into the estuary near Clarecastle. The River Fergus is known to be prone to flooding, posing risks to residential, commercial, and civic areas throughout the town.
To mitigate these flood risks, the Ennis Flood Relief Scheme involved the construction of three new stormwater pumping stations positioned along the banks of the River Fergus. These stations were designed to handle flow rates ranging from 150 litres per second to 365 litres per second and included modern screening systems and control infrastructure. FME was appointed to carry out the full Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) scope of works.
SCOPE OF WORK
FME was responsible for the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of pumping stations at three key locations: Courthouse, Castlelawn, and Francis Street. The works included:
- Submersible Pumps:
- 2 No. Xylem 15 kW pumps
- 3 No. Xylem 22 kW pumps
- 3 No. Xylem 48 kW pumps
- Pipework, valves, and fittings up to 600mm in diameter
- Grilles in overflow chambers
- Access covers and safety grilles for pumping stations and overflow chambers
- Boulder trap baskets for protection against debris
- Switchgear and control panels
- Rotating Bar Interceptor for effective inlet screening
OUTCOME
The Ennis Flood Relief Scheme significantly improved the town’s resilience to flood events, particularly in vulnerable areas around the River Fergus. The installation of the three pumping stations, combined with effective screening and control systems, has greatly enhanced the town’s stormwater management capacity. FME successfully delivered the M&E works to a high standard, contributing to the overall success of this critical flood defence infrastructure.
