SCOPE OF WORK

FME provides planned preventative maintenance for six large stormwater pumping stations beneath Belfast along the route of the A12 ‘Westlink’ road network.

The pumping stations are deep, submersible wet-well type. Routine servicing and testing helps identify potential issues before they become failures, reducing the risk of downtime and ensuring the systems remain fully operational. Our engineers carry out comprehensive inspections of each pumping station, including the pumps, sump, controls and associated equipment.

One of the pumping stations is located adjacent to the iconic Rise Sculpture at Broadway Roundabout, one of Belfast’s busiest traffic junctions. Maintenance at this location requires careful advance planning and cooperation with the site operator and effective onsite teamwork to ensure good , safe and proper completion of the task.

Specialist lifting and access equipment allows cage/basket entry into the main chamber for inspection.  Crane-assisted lifting is used to remove the pumps for up-close inspection of the pumps: physical integrity, oil status, impeller tolerances and running condition. Careful removal and reinstatement of the pump includes assessment of ancillary items such as chains, hooks and guiderails.

In-situ, test runs and analysis of site records provide information on the ongoing performance of the pumps.

Completing the work in such a busy environment demands effective teamwork to ensure safe access and lifting operations, and for efficient execution of the work whilst minimising disruption to the normal daily activities in the area.   By carrying out regular preventative maintenance, FME helps extend the lifespan of critical wastewater infrastructure while giving our client confidence that each pumping station is operating safely and as intended.
