OVERVIEW

FME acted as the MEICA contractor for the Mount Juliet Estate Wastewater Pumping Station Relocation Project, working in partnership with Donnelly Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of Mount Juliet Estate. Located in Co. Kilkenny, the luxury resort required an upgrade to its wastewater infrastructure to ensure future capacity, environmental compliance, and resilience. The project reached Substantial Completion in October 2024, with all testing, commissioning, and decommissioning phases concluded successfully.

The project involved the decommissioning and demolition of the original pumping station at Ballylinch and the construction of two new wastewater pumping stations: a main terminal station and a riverfront package station. These stations collectively handle an average daily flow of 152 cubic metres (m³/day), serving an estimated Population Equivalent (PE) of 950 and covering residential, hospitality, and estate operations within Mount Juliet.

SCOPE OF WORK

FME was responsible for the design, installation, and commissioning of the mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation (MEICA) equipment for two new wastewater pumping stations:

  • Terminal Pumping Station: A new terminal station located adjacent to Inch Road to serve the wider estate.
  • Package Pumping Station: A 7.0m deep station located along the Riverfront to serve seven low-lying properties.

Both pumping stations were equipped with modern control panels, pump assemblies, and telemetry systems. Gravity and rising main pipework were also installed, including:

  • 675m of 225mm gravity inlet sewer laid within the golf course
  • 200m of 150mm gravity sewer laid along the riverfront
  • 215m of 90mm rising main from the package station to the terminal station
  • 410m of 125mm rising main from the terminal station to the Ballylinch connection point
  • Directional drilling under the River Nore for a new rising main crossing

INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING

FME worked closely with the civil contractor and design consultants to deliver the MEICA works efficiently and within programme. Commissioning included full functional testing of pumps, control systems, alarms, and telemetry, ensuring seamless operation across both stations. Close coordination allowed for a staged switch-over from the old infrastructure to the new, minimising disruption to the estate

OUTCOME

The Mount Juliet Estate Wastewater Pumping Station Relocation Project was successfully completed in October 2024, with all objectives met. The installation of two new wastewater pumping stations, serving a total daily flow of 152m³ per day, ensures the long-term efficiency and reliability of the wastewater system. The new infrastructure now serves seven properties in a low-lying area, effectively diverting wastewater from the existing system and reducing the risk of flooding or system failure. The project also includes the installation of a 7-meter deep package pumping station, 675 meters of gravity sewer, and rising mains, all of which were designed and constructed to meet the client’s high standards. The successful decommissioning and demolition of the old pumping station, along with the abandonment of redundant pipework, ensures an environmentally responsible and future-proof system for Mount Juliet Estate.
