FME supplied, installed and commissioned E/One grinder pumping stations for a new residential development in Gweedore, Co. Donegal. The individual stations form part of a low-pressure sewer system that transfers wastewater from each property into the existing wastewater network.

The turnkey development, being delivered for Donegal County Council, is planned to comprise more than 40 homes. However, the site’s granite base, challenging terrain and dispersed property layout made the installation of a conventional gravity sewer system particularly difficult.

Gravity sewers rely on a continuous downward gradient and can require extensive deep excavation, particularly across rocky ground. The E/One ALL-TERRAIN™ Sewer System provided a practical alternative by allowing small-diameter pressure sewer pipework to follow the natural contours of the land without relying on gravity.

Each property is served by its own E/One grinder pumping station. The station transfers wastewater through the small-diameter pressure sewer and into the existing wastewater network, integrating the development with the wider wastewater infrastructure serving the Gweedore area.

This approach removed the need to construct extensive large-diameter gravity sewers through the granite ground and eliminated the requirement for a conventional centralised wastewater pumping station serving the development. It also allowed the homes to be constructed and occupied in phases while providing the flexibility for additional properties to connect as the development progresses.

Directional drilling and modern installation methods helped minimise excavation, disruption to the surrounding community and the impact on the local landscape. The completed system demonstrates how low-pressure sewer technology can help unlock development on sites where traditional wastewater infrastructure may be impractical or cost-prohibitive.

The Gweedore development marks FME’s first E/One low-pressure sewer installation in Ireland following its appointment as the sole distributor for E/One pressure sewer systems across the island of Ireland.

FME supplied, installed and commissioned the E/One equipment and will continue to provide the local technical and service support required to maintain the system. With predictable servicing requirements and no routine preventative maintenance, the system provides a reliable long-term wastewater solution for the development.
