FME is proud to have been awarded the contract to refurbish and upgrade the Sea Lion Water Treatment process at Belfast Zoo. The project involved a significant transformation of the Sea Lions’ pool, including changing the water from fresh to saline and modernising the existing water treatment facilities. This upgrade ensures that the water quality maintains excellent clarity, hygiene, and disinfection, which is essential for the health and well-being of the zoo’s three resident Sea Lions.
Key Features of the Upgrade:
- Refurbishment of existing pressure filters, including abrasive shot blasting, re-spraying, and the replacement of sand media with AFM media.
- Installation of a new saltwater chlorine generation system to replace the previous sodium hypochlorite dosing system.
- A new Ultra-Violet disinfection system to further improve water quality.
- New 22KW circulation pumps, control panels, and flow meters for enhanced performance.
- The upgraded filtration system now ensures the pool water is circulated and filtered approximately every two hours during the day, with energy-saving adjustments at night.
This upgrade, a major investment by Belfast Zoo and Belfast City Council, not only improves water quality but also enhances the visual appeal of the pool for zoo visitors while maintaining a high level of care for the Sea Lions.
